Like all the towns around us, Ashland is growing. As new homes and
businesses are built, we need to plan carefully to avoid creating new
problems and to avoid unwanted changes to the character of the town.
Business growth is vital for Ashland. Commecial property almost always
generates more in tax revenue than it costs the town in providing services.
We need to do everything we can to encourage more businesses to locate in
Ashland. However, we also need to plan this growth carefully to keep the
pleasant character of the town. The town has a redevelopment authority
with extensive powers to make this happen.
Residential growth is inevitable. While condos generally provide the town
with more tax revenue, they don't provide the same sense of community that
houses do. If we want to preserve the town's character, we need to keep
most new residentail development focused on single-family homes.
