Public education is one of the most important things our government
provides. Even those without children in the schools benefit from public
education, as schools form a foundation for communities.
From the perspective of the Board of Selectmen, most of the educational
issues are handled by the school committee and professional educators.
What is left for us to handle is the level of funding.
With the immediate financial shortfall facing Ashland, we need to protect
the quality of our schools. We need to do everything possible to find
money to avoid making cuts that will leave our kids with a substandard
education. On the other hand, we should not use the issue of school
funding to scare people into supporting new taxes to support a wide variety
of town services. We can fund quality education; it's a matter of
priorities, and education is my first priority.
